Catalina Jazz Festival 2011
The first jazz performance of each school year is the Catalina Jazz Festival at the end of November. Kids from all over Tucson and Noggales perform before college professors at the U of A and professional jazz musicians. It isn't a competition, but the opportunity to perform, receive feedback, and attend sectionals or workshops to improve their skills.
This particular performance was especially fun for me because it was the first time Sara had the chance to perform on a full drum set with the band. She is only in 5th grade and the other drummer is in 8th. I was so proud of her. She sounded great and received really positive feedback.
The kids were the last group to perform and the judges just couldn't get over how good they sounded and how young they were. Only 4 of the band members are in 7th and 8th grade. The rest are 5th and 6th graders. I am really looking forward to watching the kids continue to grow and improve.
