I Nephi 1:20

Several years ago, Chad and I went to visit my sister in law (Melinda) and brother in law (Dave) while in California.  At the close of our visit, Melinda’s father (a good man that both Chad and I have grown to respect a great deal) came to the driver’s side door of our car as we prepared to leave and said, “I just want you two to know that everything in life happens for a reason.  There are just too many good things that have happened in my life to be mere coincidences.  Have a safe trip home.” And then he left.

Chad and I looked at each other, thought the message to be somewhat strange, and began traveling back to my parent’s home in Portola Hills (some 40 minutes away).  As we began our journey home, Chad mentioned a favorite donut shop he used to visit as a kid and so we decided to take a slight detour and pick up donuts for our four cute kiddos playing at grandma and grandpa’s house.

We were only off the freeway for about 5 minutes, but when we returned, there was a major pileup in the carpool lane we had been traveling in.  The accident was new because the police had yet to arrive on the scene.  Chad and I eyed each other and began to feel rather thankful that we had stopped for donuts.

Continuing down the freeway, the rain that had begun falling shortly after we had left the Markham’s home was now beginning to pour; reducing visibility and causing Chad to feel impressed to get out of the fast lane and into a slower lane of traffic.  Seconds after he had made the change, a car that had been driving in front of us hydroplaned and spun around 180 degrees.  For one brief moment we found ourselves looking eye to eye with the terrified driver as he continued to accelerate in a backwards momentum down the highway.  Chad’s instinct allowed us to move over one more lane and give the driver the space needed to spin his car back around. We drove away from what could have been a deadly situation unharmed.   It was at that moment that both Chad and I felt the message Brother Markham had left us with sink in.  We got off the freeway and took side streets home, thanking the Lord for answering our earlier family prayers to watch over and protect us.

There have been countless experiences in my life that have continued to solidify my testimony that our Heavenly Father loves us.  He watches over us, blesses us, and even in what feels like seemingly dark moments, he walks with us.  Nephi said, “the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.” (1 Nephi 1:20)  I believe this to be true.

Easter Sunday

I love Easter.  This Sunday our friend Anna Heald asked me to come pick her up at 6 am so that she could see the kids find their Easter baskets and look for eggs.  She is 84 years old and an absolute joy.  We arrived home at 6:30 am and the kids (who had been waiting at the top of the stairs for our return) ran down and began to look for their basket of goodies.

We had breakfast together and talked about what Easter meant to each of us and then we watched the first session of Sunday morning Conference.  For me Easter is hope.  Hope for eternal life with the people I love, the family I cherish, and a son I had too little time with in mortality.  All of which would be impossible if not for the love and great sacrifice of a merciful Savior.

After conference, Anna went home and the Browns came over.  The girls decorated sugar cookies and we watched a second session of conference together.  Dinner was at 4pm and the Hubers and Robinsons joined in on the evening meal.

I wonder where my kids get all of their face making skills??????

I love Easter. . . .

Kid's Stuff

For the past two months, my life has been a crazy mess trying to prepare for our upcoming musical, "Beauty and the Beast."  I will attempt to catch up on a few events that have occurred in the meantime in between time.

Joey participated in the pinewood derby.  He didn't place, but had a lot of fun racing.

Rebecca played trumpet in the "Rodeo Days" parade for the Mormon Battalion Float.  She's had a great experience, practicing with the band and participating in an area fireside.

During Rodeo Days, Sara and Jake went to a Jazz festival in Scottsdale so I decided to take Joey and Carlee to the zoo with cousins.

Silly little cuties.

Back from Scottsdale and off again to perform at,  "Jazz for Fun."  Two years ago Henson and Sara Started dressing like the Blue's Brothers with the current bass player Skyler.  Last year Skyler graduated and Jake took his place allowing the tradition to continue.  Unfortunately his glasses broke during their trip and so he is a little cockeyed in this picture.

For Spring Break, we took a much needed vacation to CA.  I didn't sleep much leading up to our trip, but when we arrived I was finally able to relax and leave behind some of the musical chaos.  While we were there we went on our 3rd Family Hike for the year and spent a few days at Disneyland.  Oh, and Rebecca past her driver's permit exam.  I am so not ready to have a 16 year old.  AHHHHHH!

Carlee got tired of walking, but she made it through all but the last half mile.  I was impressed.

Now while I was getting a great night's sleep, Sara wasn't getting quite as much because she was sharing a bed with Carlee.  As you can see, Carlee is a bit of a bed hog.

Disneyland has a whole new Frozen Section at California Adventure, so dressed in her Elsa gown, Carlee built a snowman and watched the Frozen Sing Along Performance.  Before we returned to AZ, she even got to take a picture with her two favorite princesses.

The Saturday after we returned home, there was an Easter Egg hunt at our church.  Becca and Sara are to old to participate but the younger three had fun.

Which leads us to this Easter weekend where our musical kids had a preview performance at Anamax Park, and Joey's dance crew performed a Hip Hop number to the song Dynamite; all in between sessions of General Conference.

Lucky for Sara, we had decided previously that, "Be Our Guest," would be the best number to use as advertisement for the show because about three days ago she completely lost her voice.  She has just started to talk again, today.  During the performance she wasn't able to do much more than dance and smile at the audience but kids were coming up to her after the performance and wanting to have their pictures taken with her.  She started to feel like a real Disney Princess.  (And yes, we dyed her hair for the show.  It is supposed to wash out in 28 washes.  Sara is anxious to have her blond hair back, but she is being a good sport about it.)

Joey loves his Hip Hop dance classes.  It's fun to watch him improve and do "his thing" on stage.

Crazy weekend, crazy life.  Only two weeks till showtime.  I am super excited and somewhat stressed all at the same time.  Hopefully everything will come together, the kids will ALL stay healthy, and we will have a really great show.
