People's Choice Awards Ballroom Dance Competition

On Saturday, May 29th the girls attended their first Ballroom Dance Competition. This was a first for me having never done Ballroom dance as a kid. I am used to dance competitions but Ballroom is a totally different experience.

The girls had three areas they were competing in, Samba, ChaCha, and group. For the individual competitions the girls were paired up with a boy in their class and they had to go out on the dance floor and start dancing. Their teachers had taught them different movements they could use, but nothing was choreographed. The kids pretty much decided for themselves what they wanted to do.

For the group number they did the piece they had learned for the recital. The kids looked great and had a really good time. Rebecca danced two Sambas (She was partnered with two different boys) and took 2nd place in both. She lost out on first place to some kids who were taking private lessons. Sara didn't place in the individuals but as a group they scored 93 out of 100 pts and took first place for their choreographed routine. The audience loved them.


Here the girls are lining up for their ChaCha. The individual competition has really strict rules for kids. They are very limited in what they can wear, no makeup is allowed, and hair has to be pulled back with no ribbons, bows, flowers, etc.




The group competition was a little more relaxed. Technically I don't think they were supposed to wear dresses with fringe or sequence, but no one said anything, so their teacher decided to go ahead and let them wear their recital costumes. They danced to the Lion King song, "I just can't wait to be King."




What a fun day. After getting up at 5am the girls look a little tired, but I think they enjoyed themselves.
